24 January 2018The dishes vary daily, as one key point in Nyonya flavours is to use whatever's fresh and available. This is especially true of seafood, with prices and catches varying from day-to-day, matching the type of seafood with the best method to bring out its flavour is reflected in the changing menu.
Her dishes are in portions suitable for single diners, but groups can order a selection to share "family-style". The rice comes with a healthy serve of "chap chye" stir-fried veggies, helping to make the meal a balanced one.
In particular, her "Pong Teh" (meat cooked with preserved soy beans), "Gulai Lemak Nanas" (seafood cooked in rich gravy with pineapple chunks) and "Cili Garam" (seafood topped with spicy and slightly tart cooked chilli paste) are my go-to dishes.
About a fortnight ago, I also asked the owner to help me with catering for my relatives and friends who were dropping by my house for lunch. We quickly worked out a menu that would not be affected by any delays, and also suited her work schedule.
The result was a delicious lunch that was appreciated by all, saved me a ton of work and I got a lot of compliments for very little work (well, we did have to swing by to pick up the order, that's all). The food supplied was plentiful for second and third helpings, plus extras to giveaway too. All up, happy guests, happy host, what more can you ask for?
PS: For festive occasions, talk to the owner about seasonal specials, such as "buah keluak" chicken or pork. This is the "hero dish" of Peranakan (Nyonya) cuisine, as preparing the Indonesian "black nuts" takes a long time and quite a bit of skill. You will need to order ahead as there's limited quantities. Her version, with the gravy redolent with spice, slightly tart to counter-balance the rich, almost chocolaty qualities of the buah keluak, makes it a really superb dish. "
