" Please do not visit or fund this "hatchery", it couldn't be further away from conservation!
29 May 2018As a marine biologist, it was absolutely shocking to see baby turtles kept in very poor conditions and not released immediately into the wild where they belong!
The hatchery claim to be looking after Olive Ridley Turtles (seen on the large sign on others photos) which is impossible as they don't nest on the island, in fact they are Hawksbill/Green Turtles. Another lie written on the boards was that they were given flow to simulate the sea... The small shallow tanks they are kept in had no flow at all and were no more than salty bath tubs, not even deep enough for their lungs to develop properly.
Young turtles are born with some reserves left from their yolk sacks that gives them the energy to get to their far off feeding grounds and keeping them like this ruins almost all chances of survival.
They're kept in unrealistic, overcrowded conditions which meant many I saw had visibly severe eye infections, probably more hidden infections/diseases and were floating motionless. They were being fed cut up pieces of fish which they won't be able to find in the wild and being kept for at least a year before release, won't understand the kind of live foods they should be eating or how to catch them.
I tried to speak to the locals running it and offer friendly advice on how to make it more natural at least and offered to collect seagrass and they quickly moved to talk to people who believed the lies.
If you want to truly help turtles, visit the local Eco Trust instead who also protect nests and release the hatchlings straight into the sea as many hatcheries I've seen around the world do and should!
In speaking to the volunteers at the Eco Trust, they too had tried to offer advice and explain how actually they're destroying the chances of every single hatchling they keep from surviving in the wild... they wouldn't listen.
This goes beyond ignorance, please do not fund this money making, cruel scam. "

" Not for conservation. Let them go they'd be better trying to live in the ocean.
08 April 2018These are in a shallow bath water causing disease most had eye infections. They try to get the tourists in to sell them trips that's all this place is. A poor excuse to make money from tourists whilsts torturing these poor creatures feeding them on fish instead of sea grass and a natural diet..Wrong!...It needs getting rid off and shouldn't impress anyone! " This is an amazing initiative to ensure the survival of these baby turtles. I see a few reviews bashing this place saying that this hatchery should not be supported, that in itself is idiotic. Anyone who knows anything about turtles and sea life would know that 90% of new born turtles don't make it past their first month out in the ocean.
22 January 2018These baby turtles are kept in this nursery until they are the size of your hand, just big enough that most predictors can't swallow them, this gives these turtles a better chance at survival.
This place is awesome! "

" The place was amazing, masyaAllah. But when you plan to visit there, get more info about fast boat ticket and small things that can cost you more money.. "

" Seemed like they actually cared about the turtles. Looking after the eggs, hatching them and releasing them when ready. "

" The view is good nevertheless the situation is bit like abandoned, but maybe just because it is not holiday. The staff also limited "

" ABSOLUTE DISGRACE - DO NOT FUND THIS ATROCITY!!!!!!!!!!!!
04 August 2017I visited Gili Trawangan Turtle Hatchery this afternoon and haven't been able to stop thinking about the poor little turtles that are being kept there since. Swimming desperately to the edge of their tanks, looking out towards the beautiful ocean, their home... and going absolutely nowhere. None of them looked healthy and many had eye infections, missing fins and some were barely moving at all.
It is crucial that turtles go straight into the ocean after hatching for their survival and this place is using 'conservation' as their disguise to detain them in small tanks to 'make them stronger' when really they just want to make money from tourists. Baby turtles should not be made into a tourist attraction and it should not be allowed to make money out of these poor defenceless creatures who have such a hard life as it is.
I don't see how anybody could enjoy seeing such magnificent creatures in such depressing circumstances. It is so easy to rent a snorkel and go and see them for yourself in the ocean!
They even claimed to be housing Olive Ridley Turtles!!!!!! These are only found nesting in Mexico!!!!!!!
Absolute disgrace. I am appalled that this is even allowed to take place.
Please do not give your money to these people and visit Gili Eco Trust instead who do excellent conservation work. "
