With almost 240 million people spread across an archipelago of 17,600 islands and a porous 81,000 km coastline, Indonesia is a prime source, destination and transit country for out-bound and in-bound migrants. It also experiences important internal movements of population due to demands for labor, communal tensions and natural disasters.
IOM operations in Indonesia date back to 1979 with the processing of Vietnamese boat people arriving in Tanjung Pinang, Riau. Since then, activities have expanded significantly both in terms of their geographic reach and target populations. Today, IOM Indonesia is one of the largest IOM missions worldwide, with 20 field-offices located across the country, which includes the capital Jakarta, as well as Banda Aceh in the westernmost province of Aceh and Jayapura at the easternmost province of Papua. IOM Indonesia has over 300 staff members working on a wide range of activities, in partnership with the Government of Indonesia, the civil society and the donor communities.
